We still have to get together a full overview of our last couple of weeks with pictures and stuff, but here's a shortened list:
Fri, March 13--Brian fills on guitar for Fresh & Onlys, Oh Sees play, we all party afterwards.
Sat, March 14--Crazy house party gets busted up, show moves, Ale Mania plays their first show, Jeff Graves gains a year.
Sun, March 15--Play a fun but tired show w/Wild Thing and Personal and the Pizzas.
Mon, March 16--Prepare to leave.
Tues, March 17--Leave in the morning for Austin, stay the night at a shitty motel in Deming, NM.
Wed, March 18--Arrive at Bova's, shoot BB guns, drink beer.
Thurs, March 19--Wake up and realize that, in addition the Personals, Kim Phuc is also staying in the house. Play a weird, dead show w/Box Elders and Golden Triangle. Go to an acoustic show, go home. Hit up Walmart at 4:30 in the morning and buy BB guns.
Fri, March 20--Play a couple of shows, catch a little bit of Kim Phuc somewhere else, have my ass kicked by Gun Outfit i…
I COPIED THIS FROM MY OTRE BLOG: melissamiserable.blogpsot.com. NOT AN AFFILIATED RELEASE FROM VOLAR. JUST A 'LIL HOBBY OF MINE. READ UP. OH, AND SERIOUSLY: THANKS TO ALL OF THE BANDS INVOLVED.
A long time ago, in a far off land, I had a sense of purpose. No, wait. Let me rephrase that: 6 months ago, in NYC, I was employed.
I was a graphic designer for an elite educational cruise company wherein I'd stay late catching up on work. Thus, the IX-V lifestyle began. I was fascinated by my having of said job and becoming this working-woman sort. Wearing pant suits, sweating over rush hour, health benefits, 401que.
In order to get back at them for turning me into a weekend warrior, I began abusing my employee xeroxing privileges. Which inevitably led to "IX-V: For ___": a celebrated zine sent as gifts to transcontinental loved ones on behalf of my office induced back pain and eye-strain.
San Diego was blessed by two most excellent bands: The Fresh & Onlys and Thee Oh Sees. In addition, it will go down in the history books as our good bud Brian Carver of Christmas Island filled in on guitar for The F&Os. In one word:
If you live here and you missed it -- well woof. The show was at Bar Pink which hosts a number of FREE shows each month. The drinks are cheap and it seems to be the best venue for touring bands to play ($$$$). Oh and John Reis owns it.
Case in point: Tyvek played last Friday. I happened to grab some photos with my cell phone. Sorry for the bad quality -- 'tis the Future, man.
Totally psyched for Ale Mania, these friends of ours from here in SD, one of two great bands (the other being Beaters) born from the ashes of the Sess, to finally start playing. Tomorrow, a whole bunch of us are celebrating the 27th birthday of our good friend Jeff Graves, and he's invited some of his friends' bands to play a party in his honor. There's the Atoms, Braaiins!, and Scarlet Symphony, but a lot of people are anxious about catching Ale Mania's FIRST EVER show. Hopefully the party doesn't get busted up; it changed houses at the last minute (as you'll notice on the flyer), and now it's been moved to a well-known spot that kinda stopped doing shows for a while. Next Friday, they'll open up for Grand 'Ole Party at the Soda Bar, and it was just confirmed that they'll be opening up the April 15th Ariel Pink/Vivian Girls show at the Casbah. Keep an eye out for the Lustful Fistful 7" we'll be putting out relatively soon...
So our good friends in the Fresh & Onlys kick off their tour with Thee Oh Sees tonight at the Smell. Tomorrow brings them here to Bar Pink in San Diego, where Brian from Christmas Island will be filling in on guitar, and then a few more shows as they make their way out to SXSW. Check each band's Myspace for more info and tunes.
I'd like to continue the sentiment of Craig's post below. What he said was true. Volar Records wishes to establish a sense of community in this god forsaken land of Internet. "This" is "us" supporting our friends. HIGH FIVEEEEEEEE.
With that said,
I have never met any members of Ratas del Vaticano. However, I consider myself very close to David Serreno. We like total lee talk on ichat every single fucking god damn day... going on 8 months now. Mostly about relationshits, drugos, politits, parties, US vs Mexico, and mexican slang. Basically all in all, I consider David a good bud of mine. Total pen palzzZZzz.
With that said,
Mexican David and I will be united for the first time at this year's SXSW. His band, RATAS DEL VATICANO (Rat…
Alright, time to get these things started. We plan to give some love to every artist we're involved with and hope that they involve themselves as well. To be honest, this is one of the reasons we decided to try our hands at this--to become more active with the friends of ours who play music, to help build a community of artists and keep ourselves and everyone else involved engaged in the creative process. I know it sounds like a bunch of hippie bullshit, but oh well. Irony and stoicism are the least of our interests.
So anyway, Dan Melchior und Das Menace. There's a whole slew of history and stuff you can read about at his website, www.danmelchior.com. He's been around since 1999 playing with different bands and stuff, honing his voice. He's a Brit who makes his home in Durham, North Caronlina, with his wife. He used to play with Holly Golightly and Billy Childish. He's released a ton of stuff and kicks out great songs at an insane rate. I have to be fran…
