Dan Melchior und Das Menace

Alright, time to get these things started. We plan to give some love to every artist we're involved with and hope that they involve themselves as well. To be honest, this is one of the reasons we decided to try our hands at this--to become more active with the friends of ours who play music, to help build a community of artists and keep ourselves and everyone else involved engaged in the creative process. I know it sounds like a bunch of hippie bullshit, but oh well. Irony and stoicism are the least of our interests.

So anyway, Dan Melchior und Das Menace. There's a whole slew of history and stuff you can read about at his website, www.danmelchior.com. He's been around since 1999 playing with different bands and stuff, honing his voice. He's a Brit who makes his home in Durham, North Caronlina, with his wife. He used to play with Holly Golightly and Billy Childish. He's released a ton of stuff and kicks out great songs at an insane rate. I have to be frank--he's not someone whose work I've fully digested. My buddy Brian, of Christmas Island, talked a little bit with Dan at some point early last year, and even met up with Dan when he toured through San Diego and hung out with him a little bit. Both Dan and Christmas Island were part of Almost Ready's World's Lousy with Ideas Vol. 5 split 7" (along with Catatonic Youth, and which is completely sold out), but regretfully I never really sat down with Dan's track much because I was hearing both the CI and CY songs incessantly. Then we played some shows with the Fresh and Onlys, who rule, and who eventually suggested this split, and the more they talked with Brian about their love for Dan, I finally sat down and listened to some stuff online, kicking myself for not paying attention to his genius earlier. Ironically enough, the very same day that I was delving through Dan's stuff for the first time, our buddy Shayde from the Fresh and Onlys, who we'd been talking to about maybe putting something out at some point, dropped me a line. Let me find it...okay. Here's the first of a couple of messages Shayde sent:

Hey man...
Dan Melchior asked us if we'd wanna do a split with him. Would you be interested in that. He's one of my favorite dudes out there making music so I was pretty stoked. Let me know what you think. No pressure. Just thought it could be really cool.
Thanks,
Shayde

And here's another one after we'd talked about it for a day or so...shit. Hope I didn't delete it. Anyway, there was some great, glowing praise of Dan's work. The line from Shayde that sticks out to me is something along the lines of "I've been loving his music for a no shit ten years now." So this has become our first release, Dan contributing a couple of songs, the Fresh and Onlys contributing two of their own. (If you're in San Diego, Brian will be playing guitar with them when they come through town on the 13th.) We're excited to be putting out the 7" split with Dan Melchior und Das Menace and the Fresh and Onlys, and especially proud that it's going to be our first release. Dan has a new album shipping out any day now, Thankyou Very Much, released by SS Records, a 7"with Convulsive Records, another with Dull Knife Records, some recent stuff with Columbus Discount, and a Dan Melchior's Broke Revue LP on Hook or Crook Records. As will always be the case, if we've made any mistakes or you'd like to add information, please write us at volarrecords@gmail.com. Thank you, Dan, as well as the Fresh and Onlys (we'll have your post soon!) for being a part of this with us. Here's Dan's write-up about himself:

Dan Melchior has been doing this music stuff for a while - (1st appearance on vinyl 1997 fact fans!) - but it's in his latest work under the 'Und das Menace' moniker that he feels he has really managed to get his vision over.

The 2 songs that appear on Volar-001 are from his latest batch of Urinals influenced ditties, and in parlance native to this record's origin he would really like to say that he is 'stoked' to appear on a Volar release with his pals The Fresh and Onlys.

A native of London, England, Dan now resides in beautiful Durham, NC - where he spends his time working, writing, recording, painting and hanging out with his wife Letha and Glen the parakeet.

Happy holidays, all, hope you get through them okay. I know this can be a strange time of year for a number of you, myself included. Happy to be here to share some mighty fine recent news in the land of Volar. Marc Riley, one of the originally songwriters in the Fall, has a BBC 6 show, and just last week discovered the debut 7" by Flat Worms on Volar. He says some very kind words here about the nine-minute mark, played them again the next day, and then included them in his best of 2016 show this past Monday. We're down to the last few of our black vinyl copies. Also this past week, Pitchfork put out its list of

Matt Lamkin of the Soft Pack and Silver Shadows West Coast tour, Teach Me and Keepers live w/ the Spits

First off, a moment of reflection about the Oakland fires. I've been in my own state of shock and grief and am slowly getting back to focusing on this other stuff here. My thoughts go out to everyone involved. I had friends who were there that night and made it out safely; I had quite a few more who were close to going and decided not to. The first show I ever attended in the Bay was at a warehouse (the French Fry Factory), and the first show I ever played there was at the Ghost Town Gallery. I have more musical ties to friends in the Bay and Oakland specifically than anywhere else outside of where I live, and the creative freedom and resourcefulness of the music and arts community there is the richest that I know of in the country. There have been many thoughtful posts and articles regarding that scene in particular, the culture at large, and the nature of warehouse spaces like Ghost Ship. I was asked to do an interview for NBC San Diego and only agreed to help spread that messa…

OUT NOW! Debut LPs by Matt Lamkin (of the Soft Pack), Silver Shadows, Part Time/Drinking Flowers 7", OUT SOON! Tracy Bryant 7"

Well, hi there. A lot's happened since the last time we posted. Really awful shit on a political and cultural level, mostly good stuff on the personal. Either way, things have been really hectic, and the Royal We have been preoccupied. But here we are with some news!

First up, we have Where I'm Matt, the excellent debut solo LP by my old buddy Matt Lamkin, frontman for the Soft Pack, who went so far as playing Letterman and doing a goofy video with Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show and Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul and touring a tour and putting out records on Kemado Records and Mexican Summer, among others. The LP features a handful of Lamkin's friends playing various instruments, and retains the hookiness of the Soft Pack while adding a healthy dose of experimental stuff.

Stream the album and pick up limited yellow vinyl, edition of 500, for $12.
Next up, another great debut, and unfortunately the last, by the very excellent Oakland-based female-harmony led Silver Shadows. I…
