Volar SXSW w/ Susan, Lazy, Destruction Unit, Viet Cong, Growwing Pains

So, uh, it’s Wednesday, a few days into this year’s SXSW chaos, and I’m late. Not because I’m there (third year in a row I haven’t made it out) but just because. No big reason. However, a few Volar bands are out there, and they have a few shows there and some tour dates after, so, you know, here you go. Susan, Lazy, Growwing Pains (we’re in talks to release something soon), Viet Cong (same), Destruction Unit, they’re all playing this week (and, in some cases, upcoming weeks as well). Info below!

Susan, whose “Just Call It” 7” we released back in the fall and which is still garnering some great reviews (see below), are a few days into their SXSW tour. Read and listen and keep an eye out for these dates. Just out some good recent reviews here and here.

Lazy are also under the big black Texas sun this week, with plenty of copies of the “Soft Sheets”/”Don’t Die” 7” we just released on hand. (We’ve got limited blue & red copies on our bandcamp page and at our other webstore) Listen to the 7” and check out their dates below.

Viet Cong. You’ve probably heard about ‘em lately. They rule. They’re going in to record their next LP next month and are hoping to have a couple of songs for me to release as a 7”. I’ll keep you posted on that. Here’s some of their dates below.

And lastly, Growwing Pains are great new-ish band out of Detroit. My buddy Aaron Skufcka in Milwaukee sent me their stuff to check out (as he does a lot), and I really dug it out and reached and said so, so we’ll be doing something soon. Not totally sure what yet, but they’re also playing SXSW and some shows around it. HERE THEY ARE. Jam a bunch of their tunes here.

NEW - Teenage Burritos - Something to Cry About debut LP on limited white vinyl - $15

Following a cassette on Burger Records and 7” on Volar Records, Something to Cry About is the debut LP by San Diego kinda punk/kinda pretty quartet Teenage Burritos, a co-release between Burger and Volar (whose owner Craig Oliver was in Christmas Island with Burritos guitarist Brian Carver and drummer Lucy Wehrly). Singer/bassist Kirsten Gundrel and guitarist Kevin Gist round out the band, one that leans in to noisy punk like the lead-off track “Flytrap” and the Black Flag cover “Paralyzed,” to more …

OUT NOW! Ice Balloons debut LP Fiesta. Flat Worms "Red Hot Sand" debut 7", US tour w/ Ty Segall, Euro tour this week

(Volar Records owner Craig Oliver (ME), right, w/ Ice Balloons at Helmuth Projects)

Hi there.

Ahem.

Although I've been regularly sending out newsletters, turns out that it's been nearly FOUR MONTHS since I've posted here. I'll try to keep it brief.

FIRST:

Out now: Volar has been incredibly honored to have released the debut LP Fiesta by NYC noise-rock supergroup Ice Balloons, counting amongst their ranks Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio, Sean Kennerly of Samiam, Sean Powell and Dani Miller of Surfbort, and Dan Scinta of Wild Yaks. The band is currently wrapping up their US tour, the album is available on limited teal vinyl, only $12.

Last year, Volar was also lucky enough to release the debut 7" by my friends in LA trio Flat Worms, comprised of Will Ivy (Dream Boys, Wet Illustrated, Will Ivy solo), Tim Hellman (currently Thee Oh Sees, formerly of Ty Segall & Sic Alps), and Justin Sullivan, who spent years in the Babies and then backing his Babies bandmate Kevin …

Matt Lamkin mini-tour w/ Hot Snakes! Oh Boland UK tour w/ Protomartyr! New Susan 7"! New shirts! New totes!

Hey there! Gonna keep this one to the point, about to head up to Long Beach for the first part of this Matt Lamkin mini-tour w/ Hot Snakes.

Have you heard Matt's record we put out earlier this year? It's stellar, and it's only $10 for limited orange vinyl.

Oh Boland also heads out on tour this coming weekend with another of our favorite bands Protomartyr. Their debut LP Spilt Milk has just been repressed on limited yellow for only $10. Pick up tickets for the show at Protomartyr's web site.

Following their debut "Just Call It" 7" from three years ago and their debut LP Never Enough last year, LA power-pop trio Susan are back with another 7" EP, TV Girls. Preorder limited color vinyl, out 12/08/17/, and listen to "Little Notes."

We made new shirts! Hot pink Volar logo and dark grey. We also now have tote bags, our logo on navy blue. Buy the shirt for $15, the tote for $8, or order them together for $20.
