Volar SXSW w/ Susan, Lazy, Destruction Unit, Viet Cong, Growwing Pains

So, uh, it’s Wednesday, a few days into this year’s SXSW chaos, and I’m late. Not because I’m there (third year in a row I haven’t made it out) but just because. No big reason. However, a few Volar bands are out there, and they have a few shows there and some tour dates after, so, you know, here you go. Susan, Lazy, Growwing Pains (we’re in talks to release something soon), Viet Cong (same), Destruction Unit, they’re all playing this week (and, in some cases, upcoming weeks as well). Info below!

Susan, whose “Just Call It” 7” we released back in the fall and which is still garnering some great reviews (see below), are a few days into their SXSW tour. Read and listen and keep an eye out for these dates. Just out some good recent reviews here and here.

Lazy are also under the big black Texas sun this week, with plenty of copies of the “Soft Sheets”/”Don’t Die” 7” we just released on hand. (We’ve got limited blue & red copies on our bandcamp page and at our other webstore) Listen to the 7” and check out their dates below.

Since we released Destruction Unit’s Sonoran LP (Bandcamp / Soundcloud / Webstore) back in 2011, they’ve been truckin’ along and destroyin’ eardrums ever since. SXSW and beyond below.

Viet Cong. You’ve probably heard about ‘em lately. They rule. They’re going in to record their next LP next month and are hoping to have a couple of songs for me to release as a 7”. I’ll keep you posted on that. Here’s some of their dates below.

And lastly, Growwing Pains are great new-ish band out of Detroit. My buddy Aaron Skufcka in Milwaukee sent me their stuff to check out (as he does a lot), and I really dug it out and reached and said so, so we’ll be doing something soon. Not totally sure what yet, but they’re also playing SXSW and some shows around it. HERE THEY ARE. Jam a bunch of their tunes here.

Happy holidays, all, hope you get through them okay. I know this can be a strange time of year for a number of you, myself included. Happy to be here to share some mighty fine recent news in the land of Volar. Marc Riley, one of the originally songwriters in the Fall, has a BBC 6 show, and just last week discovered the debut 7" by Flat Worms on Volar. He says some very kind words here about the nine-minute mark, played them again the next day, and then included them in his best of 2016 show this past Monday. We're down to the last few of our black vinyl copies. Also this past week, Pitchfork put out its list of

First off, a moment of reflection about the Oakland fires. I've been in my own state of shock and grief and am slowly getting back to focusing on this other stuff here. My thoughts go out to everyone involved. I had friends who were there that night and made it out safely; I had quite a few more who were close to going and decided not to. The first show I ever attended in the Bay was at a warehouse (the French Fry Factory), and the first show I ever played there was at the Ghost Town Gallery. I have more musical ties to friends in the Bay and Oakland specifically than anywhere else outside of where I live, and the creative freedom and resourcefulness of the music and arts community there is the richest that I know of in the country. There have been many thoughtful posts and articles regarding that scene in particular, the culture at large, and the nature of warehouse spaces like Ghost Ship. I was asked to do an interview for NBC San Diego and only agreed to help spread that messa…
