DEALS/STEALS: Volar Bay Area 6-record set and LA 5-record set, collected Beaters/Ale Mania/Teach Me releases, Soft Riot 2xLP for $10

Hey, look, we're back and it hasn't even been two weeks. A quick update to let everyone know about some big deals and steals we've set up.

Beaters and Ale Mania were the first two bands "signed" to Volar back when we decided to try this thing out in early 2009. Both projects were born out of the demise of the spectacular The Sess, for our the best band of their time in San Diego. Beaters is Jeremy Rojas taking care of all of the writing and vocals and most of the instrumentation, with Andrew Montoya recording and drumming. In Ale Mania, Montoya is up front, writing all songs and playing all instruments, with Rojas lending vocal and guitar duties when needed. A few months after the Sess announced they were disbanding, the first Beaters and Ale Mania tracks surfaced on Myspace, and within a couple of weeks, the idea for Volar first came about, and Rojas and Montoya were the first two artists we approached, along with Ratas del Vaticano and Fresh and Onlys. Within the year, all four of those artists saw releases on Volar, with Ale Mania and Beaters contributing to the 6x2x12" USA/Canada post-punk comp. Eventually both those bands saw the release of their debut LPs, and later Beaters' "Jester" 7" as well. Now both Rojas and Montoya are in Teach Me, whose debut 7" we released last year, and who are prepping their debut LP for Volar. We were digging out our archives and uncovered some very limited test presses of the Beaters and Ale Mania LPs and "Jester" 7", and now you can those, as well as Ale Mania's first 7" "Lustful Fistful" and Teach Me's "Collector" 7" on limited color vinyl for only $30 at our store, limited to 10 copies.

Volar LA is a five-record set with limited color vinyl by Flat Worms, Tracy Bryant, Cosmonauts, Susan, and the split Part Time / Drinking Flowers 7".

Volar Bay Area collects six great records by Bay Area artists Shannon and the Clams, Silver Shadows, Fine Steps, Lenz, Uzi Rash, and Window Twins into one $25 set.

We've also compiled the first two stellar albums by UK-based one-man dystopian-synth project
Soft Riot into one $10 batch.

Tiger High's debut vinyl releases, their Inside the Acid Coven LP and "Christine" 7", are available together for only $5.

THAT'S IT BE SAFE OUT THERE

Happy holidays, all, hope you get through them okay. I know this can be a strange time of year for a number of you, myself included. Happy to be here to share some mighty fine recent news in the land of Volar. Marc Riley, one of the originally songwriters in the Fall, has a BBC 6 show, and just last week discovered the debut 7" by Flat Worms on Volar. He says some very kind words here about the nine-minute mark, played them again the next day, and then included them in his best of 2016 show this past Monday. We're down to the last few of our black vinyl copies. Also this past week, Pitchfork put out its list of

Matt Lamkin of the Soft Pack and Silver Shadows West Coast tour, Teach Me and Keepers live w/ the Spits

First off, a moment of reflection about the Oakland fires. I've been in my own state of shock and grief and am slowly getting back to focusing on this other stuff here. My thoughts go out to everyone involved. I had friends who were there that night and made it out safely; I had quite a few more who were close to going and decided not to. The first show I ever attended in the Bay was at a warehouse (the French Fry Factory), and the first show I ever played there was at the Ghost Town Gallery. I have more musical ties to friends in the Bay and Oakland specifically than anywhere else outside of where I live, and the creative freedom and resourcefulness of the music and arts community there is the richest that I know of in the country. There have been many thoughtful posts and articles regarding that scene in particular, the culture at large, and the nature of warehouse spaces like Ghost Ship. I was asked to do an interview for NBC San Diego and only agreed to help spread that messa…

VIDEO PREMIERES/REVIEWS for Flat Worms (Thee Oh Sees/Ty Segall/Kevin Morby/the Babies) & Oh Boland, Matt Lamkin of the Soft Pack

We'll try and keep this one short and sweet. LA Record was kind enough to premiere the video for "Petulance" by Flat Worms from their "Red Hot Sand" debut 7". The band and I and some friends were out in Borrego Springs/Anza Borrego shooting a video for RHS when they popped into that liquor store after dinner to grab some stuff and started dancing. Somebody filmed it, I joked about it being a second video, for "Petulance," so we raced back and begged the owner to open the store and let us shoot for real. So here you. We still have both limited red and gray vinyl available for $5.

The band is playing a record release show at Permanent Records in Highland Park tomorrow. The band stars in the video below along with Rachel Peschman and Abigail Barnett, and the liquor store owner's son, Chad Barnes Jr. (I was hiding.)

Also, the great Yellow Green Red recently reviewed the 7":
